The Steam Deck itself does not have an HDMI port.
While gaming notebooks are often equipped with an HDMI port for external video output to a TV or display, Steam Deck, as a portable device, does not have an HDMI port.
The only physical ports on the Steam Deck, in terms of connecting to external devices, are a single USB type-C port and a micro SD card slot.
There are two ways to use HDMI external output with Steam Deck
Since the USB type-C port on Steam Deck is DisplayPort 1.4 (Alt mode supported), you can use a compatible USB hub or Steam Deck docking station HDMI external output is possible.
The most reliable option is a genuine docking station, but since the price is rather high at $89, it is more cost-effective to use a general-purpose USB hub with HDMI external output, such as for MacBook Pro.
The Steam Deck's USB external output and charging function are exclusive (one port can be used for both), so when using a third-party USB hub for HDMI external output, it is essential to choose a USB hub that also has a power input terminal using PD (Power Delivery) from the viewpoint of charging. It is practically indispensable.
Steam Deck Docking Station
The docking station, a genuine Steam Deck accessory, allows the use of external output via HDMI and display port.
The Steam Deck also supports dual display using both HDMI and display, but the video output standard is "up to 4k 60hz or 1440p 120hz", which is less powerful than the Steam Deck's "up to 8K @60Hz or 4K @120Hz" video output standard. The performance is lower.
Third-party USB hub with HDMI external output (USB type-C)
There are many USB hubs with HDMI external output and PD charging ports available at low prices from unknown Chinese manufacturers on Amazon, etc. However, it is better to choose a major third-party product in order to "avoid getting a bad one" and "avoid the risk of damaging the device.
Although pricey, you can get comparable functionality for less than half the price of the official Steam Deck docking station.
HDMI out and PD port, one USB A. Minimal, but the advantage is the low price.
It costs about $20 more than a USB hub from an unknown Chinese manufacturer, but it is still cheaper and more reliable than the original Steam Deck docking station.
Especially when connecting to external devices while charging via PD, the USB hub itself will generate a lot of heat, so you want to choose a reliable manufacturer with a good warranty.
